Will GOD Speak to You Through Others?

By Shaun Shuler

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7‬:‭7‬-‭8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Many of us Christians pray to GOD looking for answers to issues we are facing or needing direction in our lives. The good news is GOD will speak to us, His people. He will speak to us through the Bible, or through our thoughts by the HOLY SPIRIT. Another way GOD speaks to us that often times gets overlooked, is through other people.

GOD will send people in our lives to give us GOD-led advice.

Now take Moses for example. GOD spoke to him in the burning bush (Exodus chapter 3) and told him to go to Egypt to lead the children of Israel to the promised land. GOD also talked to Moses many times throughout his confrontations with Pharaoh and in the wilderness after leaving Egypt. But even through all the miraculous ways GOD spoke to Moses, GOD still used Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law to speak to Moses and give him directions.

“When his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said, “What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?”

“Moses’ father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good. You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may GOD be with you. You must be the people’s representative before GOD and bring their disputes to Him. Teach them His decrees and instructions, and show them the way they are to live and how they are to behave. But select capable men from all the people—men who fear GOD, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you. If you do this and GOD so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied.” Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said.”

‭‭ Exodus‬ ‭18‬:‭14, 17‬-‭24‬ ‭NIV‬‬

‭‭
We may not be able to audibly hear the voice of GOD, but GOD can and will speak to us in other ways, including through people around us.

How often do we want answers from GOD, only to miss it because it is coming from a source (another person), we are not expecting?

GOD even used a donkey to convey a message to Balaam:

“Then the LORD opened the donkey’s mouth, and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?” Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If only I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.” The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?” “No,” he said.”

‭‭Numbers‬ ‭22‬:‭28‬-‭30‬ ‭NIV

Once we receive a word of advice or direction from someone, we have to then ask ourselves if this is SPIRIT-led from GOD or coming from the devil.

If it is from GOD, it will not contradict anything found in the Bible. If it is from the enemy, it will usually be something that causes confusion or is something that leads us to rationalizing some action that results in us sinning against GOD.

So, when you are faced with difficult decisions, uncertainty on what to do, or even going along in life with no immediate issues, remember GOD could be trying to get your attention by speaking to you through someone in your life. Take heed and be sensitive to its leading.
